Is Affiliate Marketing Right For You?
Affiliate marketing looks to be an attractive way to make a living at first glance. You get to sit at home on the internet all day and, if you want, you can do it in your comfy pajamas. Plus you get to set your own hours and be your own boss. It sounds promising so far, doesn’t it?
But now it is time for the reality check: affiliate marketing is not all plain sailing. Before you get started you should really ask: is affiliate marketing right for you?
Get Rich Quick – Get Lost
Affiliate marketing involves getting people to click on links to merchant websites. If those people then go on to make a purchase, you get a commission. It sounds easy right? Well, it is not.
In the early days of the internet things were very different and affiliate marketers could put up mediocre content and make a quick killing. As a result the industry got a reputation for being spammy and in the really dark corners crooks used adware to trick users and merchants for profit.
The industry is now very different. The crooks and the spammers still exist, but most affiliate marketers are honest, hard working people trying to make a living.
One of the most attractive things about the industry is its low cost of entry. To get started you just need to set up a blog or a website and that can be done with very little money indeed. But because it is so easy to do everyone is doing it. Well, not everyone, but there are thousands – even millions - of affiliate marketers and the challenge is getting your voice heard.
Getting your voice heard is not easy. But it can be done.
The first thing that you need to come to terms with is the time it will take – success in affiliate marketing is not something that can be achieved quickly. Most affiliate marketers end up feeling incredibly frustrated in the early days after putting in time and effort to a website for very small initial returns.
Building an affiliate marketing website is something that you do for the long term – we are talking months and years. You will not earn a living in a few days or weeks, but if you are willing to invest time, plant the seeds, promote, and create, you will see your business grow.
Find Your Niche
So there are two things that you need to know before you enter affiliate marketing:
- There are a lot of people doing it and some products and niches are incredibly competitive.
- It takes time to build your business
Those two challenges are helpful because they point to the way forward. When starting out in affiliate marketing choose a niche that is small and has less competition than the big ones. Also, try to select something that you are interested in. This will help to keep you going in the early days when you are getting frustrated at the lack of money you are making. Focusing on a small niche, meanwhile, will get quicker results than trying to take on the highly competitive niches and sectors.
The final tip is that you need to create good content. You can get your traffic from a wide variety of sources, including Google, other search engines, advertising, or social media. But wherever your traffic is coming from, you need to have good content that people will want to see and read.
So, back to the original question: is affiliate marketing right for you? If you can find a small niche that you’re interested in, and you’re willing to create good content and promote it over time, then yes, affiliate marketing could be right for you. And you could make a really good living out of it.
