How To Market Your Business on Twitter
Twitter might be an unexpected place to market your business. But it can make a huge impact. Using Twitter to market your business is not only important in the digital media world of today, but it's a fun and interactive way to connect with your customers. One of the many great things about Twitter is that it's easy to set up, manage, and use. Don't think of using Twitter as “another thing to do.” Instead think of it as simply a conversation that you're engaging in with other like-minded people who you'd want to talk with anyway. This conversation can boost your profits and help your business. Talk about friends with benefits!
Here are a few things you should consider before getting started:
1. Set Up Your Account
Signing up for Twitter is fast and free. After you choose your username and password, your profile will show up with a default image of a cute little egg. As cute as it is, an egg means you haven’t hatched your account yet. And it also conveys the message that you’re not really taking your Twitter account seriously. Don’t be an egg for long. Here’s how to hatch your Twitter profile quickly and make sure you set up your account:
When you first log in, go to the Setting button in the upper right (it looks like a wheel). Then go to Edit Profile. From here you can change your profile photo so you’re no longer an egg. It’s best to use a real photo of yourself so that people see that you’re a human. Professional headshots are best, but if you don’t yet have a headshot, the logo of your business works too. Now get ready to meet the world by filling in some other details.
2. Fill Out Your Bio
You want your profile to be as informative and visually appealing as possible. Include all of your information, like website address, location, and other important facts that any potential customers would want to know. Filling out each piece of info easily conveys who you are, where you are, and what your business is about. If you work from home and privacy is an issue, you might not want the public to know the physical location of your address. You can go into the Security and Privacy tab and uncheck the box that says “add a location to my tweets.”
You’ll also want to change your profile main image and background image to something simple, appealing, and relevant to your business. Twitter recommends the background image dimensions of 1252 x 626. Even though Twitter is text-heavy platform, images are still seen and noticed. Make sure they’re high quality.
3. Don't Overly Promote Yourself
You may have a friend whose Twitter posts are a slew of “me, me, me, me, me.” And you probably want to unfollow her (if you haven’t already!) Remember this when using Twitter for your own business. If your Twitter account turns into an endless banter of self-promotion, people will want to unfollow you.
Promote relevant conversations that others have started, or other good ideas or stories that affect your industry. If you can’t create original content for your business, curate other relevant conversations using the retweet button.
Find and follow other people or companies that are involved in your niche area. Add your Twitter account to databases like wefollow and twellow so that other users can find your business based on their interests.
4. Be Relevant and Useful
Self-promotion isn't always a bad thing. It can be a very effective tool when done right. Steer away from the traditional marketing techniques of tweeting “buy now!” or “big sale!” Tweets that scream at your customers and give them orders will only make them run far, far away. It also looks spammy.
Instead, talk to your followers like you would talk to your friends. If you offer a deal or an exclusive sale and want to promote it on Twitter, make sure you post the sale in a way that engages and connects with your followers rather than screams at them or pressures them to buy.
For example, if you want to sell your purse to your friend, would you say, “BUY MY PURSE! IT'S CHEAP BUT PRETTY!!” or would you say, “Hey, I want to sell my purse. I think it fits your style and you've complimented me on it before, so I wanted to offer it to you if you're interested.”
5. Make it Easy to Manage
The increasing mobile web usage means that it’s easier than ever to find an app to help you manage your account. Download an app or a mobile social media management tool to keep up with your new Twitter account. Engaging with people promptly is important. Echofon is a fantastic app for streamlining Twitter on your iPhone, while Buffer allows you to schedule Tweets in advance.
If more than one person will be managing your Twitter account or if you have more than one Twitter or other social media account that needs managing, consider using a tool such as Sprout Social or Hootsuite. You'll feel confident that every Tweet gets answered. And it helps to make sure that you're using Twitter in the most meaningfully engaging way possible.
Using Twitter the right way can be a fantastic and fun marketing tool for your business. By interacting with your customers and providing useful and informative content, you'll establish and build your brand in a seamless way.
