Let iPage Services Empower Your SEO Efforts

Why SEO Is So Important

Getting found on search engines is vital for businesses big and small. Google alone processes roughly 40,000 search requests every single second, which equates to roughly 3.5 billion searches per day. If anybody is looking for pretty much anything, there’s a good chance that they will use a search engine.

If your company or product appears at or near the top of the search results for relevant keywords, you can draw in a lot of high-quality traffic. Traffic, in turn, can be converted into leads, customers, and ultimately profits. This is true not only for online companies, like Amazon, but also local brick-and-mortar establishments. In fact, a survey from Brightlocal revealed that 95% of consumers use search engines at least once a year to find a local business. Nearly 40% use search engines at least once a week.

As such, the spots at or near the top of search engines (the front page) are considered “prime real estate”. To get there, you’ll have to be aware of content strategies and best practices that can help make your website more attractive for search engines. There are a lot of Search Engine Optimization tactics you can try for yourself if you have the time, or you can hire an SEO firm to help improve your rankings.

How a Search Engine Works

Let’s talk about how search engines work. Search engines, like Google, send out “bots”, which are software programs that crawl over your website. These bots analyze your site to figure out what it’s about and determine its overall quality. The bots also examine who your content, products, and services will be relevant for.

Your website will then be ranked for various search terms and audiences. When someone conducts a search, they will be displayed a list of websites. Google (and other search engines) will place the sites that it has determined to be of the highest quality, and most relevant for the user, at or near the top of the search results.

With SEO you are trying to prove that your website is both high-quality and relevant for various “search terms” or “key phrases.” These search terms will be identified by you or an SEO expert as being relevant for your business. In other words,  what terms will people who are interested in your products or services use? You will then target these terms with “keyword” rich content.

Simple SEO Tips to Make Your Website Attractive to Search Engines

So how can you improve your website’s search engine rankings? There are tons of factors that search engines examine to determine the quality of a website. We’ve put together a quick list of some basic SEO factors and strategies.

Grammar & Spelling – Search engines will check your website for typos, grammatical errors, and all the rest. Spell checking with Google Docs or MS Word can catch many of the errors that a search engine might.

Relevant alt tags and image file names – Search engines cannot view images, but they can read “alt tags” and image file names. Make sure these labels are relevant and descriptive for the keywords you are targeting.

Clean, Attractive URLs – The “Universal Resource Locator” is the text you type into your browser address bar (i.e. ipage.com). It’s smart, but not necessary, to make your website domain name directly related to your business. For example, “JimsPubNYC” has the business’s name (Jim’s), type (pub) and geolocation (New York City) in it. The “path”, or text that comes after the “/” (JimsPubNYC.com/AboutUs), should also be clear, and when appropriate, keyword rich. Don’t use numbers or gibberish (JimsPubNYC.com/1234).

Mobile responsive – More searches are now conducted on mobile devices than on desktop and laptop computers. As such, search engines favor websites that are mobile friendly. This is especially true for searches being conducted on smartphones.

Backlinks – Websites that have a lot of backlinks, which are links from external websites, are considered “authoritative.” Search engines pay close attention to backlinks and treat them basically as endorsements.

Provide Compelling Written Content – Finally, the importance of content for search engine optimization cannot be overstated. Search engines want to present relevant content to their users. Thus, you have to provide relevant content. Written content, such as blog posts, great product descriptions, and wonderful page content, are all essential.

When it comes to content, there are many factors to consider. For example, search engines tend to favor websites with an “About Us” page that lists who is behind the business and where it is located. Ultimately, it’s wise to develop an entire content strategy.
